Bengals and Savannahs are about 15% more muscle mass than a normal house cat making their metabolism faster and their nutritional needs more demanding. Weaning these little guys can be unpredictable. They are generally heavy, solid kittens but upon weaning, at around 8 weeks they can drop weight significantly. Some kittens transition to food without issue and are nice and plump and ready to go sooner while others prefer their mother’s milk and need more time to transition and gain weight before going home. It is not uncommon for a kitten to be kept longer in order to gain back weight lost during the weaning process. It is important to refer to your breeder’s expertise as to when your kitten can go home. If your kitten is being spayed or neutered before going home your kitten will come home after alter which is completed at or around 12 weeks of age.
There is no cat that is 100% hypoallergenic; however, Bengals with a single coat are the most hypoallergenic. As a fellow cat allergy sufferer myself, I can tell you that most Brown Spotted Bengals and some of the Snow variety Spotted Bengals are truly non-reactive and very low to almost no shedding. The less traditional colors such as Silver Spotted tend to have more of an undercoat and are more reactive. Having stated this, each Bengal‘s pelt is unique. A litter may have two kittens with single coats (more hypoallergenic) and one kitten with a partial undercoat (more reactive). An experienced breeder will be able to tell early on which kittens will have a possibility of being more reactive and which kittens will be more hypoallergenic. If you are an allergy sufferer it is important to visit your kitten beforehand to make an informed decision for yourself. Out of town forever families can request a small blanket or swatch of material that has been exposed to your kitten. Many reputable breeders have closed catteries to protect the health of their kittens and themselves and requesting material exposed to your kitten may be the best route to test out your reaction. Whatever the case, there are ways to gather information on your potential kitten and come to the best decision for your family. Savannah kittens provide some hypoallergenic qualities as well but have a greater variance between kittens and within the breed. Many breeders will amend their contract with a grace period for allergy sufferers to return the kitten with partial refund if it becomes clear that the kitten and owner are incompatible due to allergic reaction. Always ask questions as Bengals and Savannahs have a life expectancy of 12-15+ years and these beauties are a lifetime commitment.
If you have heard that Bengals and Savannahs like water, this can be true. Many of them will venture into the shower or bath when their owners are bathing. Some will play in bath water with their toys and others tip their bowls or row the water in them with their paws. Some Bengals and Savannahs will not mind water if they come in contact with it by chance and others will not prefer water at all, similar to the common house cat. Bengals and Savannahs will have different levels of preference for water just like people. Your Bengal or Savannah will more likely engage in water play if you introduce them as young kittens. In general Bengals tend to like water play more than Savannahs who prefer to experience water on their own terms.
